Ever wonder what happens to your computer once you throw it away? There are people scavenging through its insides once it arrives at the scrapyard, looking for the computer’s think tank – the CPU – the processor chip – to add to their collection. These people seek to preserve our technological history by collecting chips from all eras of computing. Jim is one such collector. Wide Open Mind travels with Jim to the scrapyard on a hunt for chips and sits down to chat with him about his finds over the years.
Also on WOM – This week’s predictions: Quantum computing is taking over and complicating counting with your fingers.

This is my favorite episode yet! Wonderful job as always and I think we owe you both a round of applause for braving the sometimes dangerous world of chip scavenging – “It’s the Claw; you’re afraid of the Claw!” I’m happy to know that no producers were harmed in the making of this podcast. Just about laughed myself out of my chair with the end bit about the new finger counting method, Leigh :D

Nice work Zeidners. Interesting episode. I was a bit confused by the chip talk. Maybe you could’ve explained the significance of the numbers more or maybe I should just watch it again. I thought the intro was artistic, the way you placed yourselves on the chair. I also enjoyed the junkyard footage and would’ve liked to see more of that.

Stepping up the film quality every episode! Good angles great editing. I would have liked to see more junkyard footage but you guys just keep getting better and better!

I agree with Andy–I loved the junkyard footage! I saw so many cool things in this episoide tho: the closeups of the computer chips, the logo floating by signaling a new segment and really cool footage in the junkyard! Sadly, I was actually interested in all the chips because you guys seemed so excited about them. Keep up the good work!
