Wide Open Mind is a netcast about all things science and technology related. It started as a concept in the summer of 2007 when we (Steve and Leigh) sat down in the Scottie MacBean coffee shop in Worthington, Ohio one evening to brainstorm ideas for video projects. Over the past year, we both had a whole new world open up to us while listening to audio netcasts. We found there was a fount of information that people were willing to broadcast over the net for free. Alex and Leo had been talking on Macbreak Weekly about how important netcasting was about to become and we thought it would be fun to get a little bit of our own content out for other people to watch as well. In addition to creating some original content, we could work on improving our filming/editing skills and get some other people involved in the process as well.

Steve works in the world of computers. He has many to keep him company at work and at play: the Server, the Windows computer, the Mac, the Linux computer, the Laptops, the Arcade, and his dear Crackberry. He can tell you his opinions of each one too including the good, the bad, the love-hate relationships, the addictions, etc.

Leigh works as a research laboratory technician. She is excited to be working on a project detecting protein/protein interactions and the implications of those interactions. She has found that the smell of TEMED and Beta-Mercaptoethanol are her least favorite lab smells (anyone who likes them is crazy) and as strange as it may seem, she enjoys the smell of DEPC and Paraformaldehyde (powder form…don’t inhale or you may die). Her favorite laboratory procedure is immunofluoresence. It requires fine motor skills and you get to see really neat things under the microscope. She also enjoys a good round of western blotting when the results show her what she wants to see. There’s nothing like good strong (and correct) protein expression to brighten your day.
